1. The Test of Satan: Be an Overcomer

Satan is our adversary par excellence. In the book of Daniel 10, it took 21 days for Gabriel and Michael to defeat him. He was the pinnacle and perfect creation of God (Isa. 14 and Eze. 28) until he twisted his wisdom and rebelled against his Creator. He is the father of lies, a false accuser, and a slanderer who accuses the brethren 24/7 before God (Rev. 12:10).

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

He is a Tempter and Destroyer of the works of God. The work of God is to build in you the holy and perfect righteous character to replace Satan on this earth. Satan has deceived mankind by promising that the reward of the saved Christians is heaven—claiming that Christians go to heaven when they die.

He is misdirecting you to heaven because that is his target. He is the ruler of the earth; this was his domain, but he wanted to go to heaven. However, God will give this earth to the Christians who will be saved. The earth is a masterpiece of God’s creation, but Satan corrupted it. God will burn this earth (2 Pet. 3:10) and replace it with a new one (Rev. 21:1).

Obey All The Commandments of God To Be An Overcomer

Satan does not want YOU, the righteous Christians, to get it from him. Therefore, daily he is destroying you with his false accusations, deceits, temptations, and false promises. Christ said the righteous Christians obey all the commandments of God (Luke 1:6). Be An Overcomer and obey. Satan’s false preachers say the laws were “done away with” at the Cross, contrary to what Christ told us:

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (Mat. 5:17-18)

Any preachers who say we are no longer compelled to obey the LAWS of God (the Ten Commandments and Lev. 23) are false preachers. They are liars. Paul said the children of disobedience are the work of Satan. And in the parables of the Tares, the tares are those who work lawlessness, which is sin—and SIN is the transgression of God’s laws (1 John 3:4). You must overcome Satan to enter God’s Kingdom on the earth.

2. The Test of the World- Be An Overcomer

The world is ruled by Satan (John 12:21). He is our Adversary (1 Peter 5:8). You may work in a company where only a few are true Christians who have the Holy Spirit of God. Most of these fellow workers have no Holy Spirit and, therefore, they are at enmity with God’s laws (James 4:4).

“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.” (Romans 8:7)

While you are in the world, James wrote that we must remain spotless.

“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:27) Do you really and sincerely follow these exhortations? Do you share your blessings with the widows and orphans? Do you give offerings or tithes to God? If not, then you are not investing in your life toward the Kingdom of God (Luke 16:9). Are you like the rich young man who walked away because he had great possessions? (Mat. 19:22).

Read the Story of the Sower:

1. He went out to sow seeds.
2. Some fell on the path and were eaten by birds.
3. Others fell on rocky ground; they sprouted but died in the sun.
4. Seeds that fell among thorns grew but were choked.
5. But some fell on good soil (good Christians), grew, and yielded a huge crop—30, 60, or 100 times what was sown (Mat. 13:3-9).

You must overcome the work of the human flesh described in Gal. 5:19-21. Everyone knows the kinds of bad things that weak people want to do. They have sex with people of the same sex or sex when they are not married. Bad people do things that are bad and disgusting. They worship idols like careers, ambitions, or habits—these could be the idols of your heart.

Show Your Good Light

They do magic to hurt people. Wicked people become enemies and they fight one another. They are jealous of other people. These sinful individuals become very angry. They want to please themselves and to be important. Evil doers cause trouble. Bad people make people belong to different groups. They want things that belong to other people. They are drunks. Unruly people have wild parties. And they like to do many other bad things like those.

So I warn you again, as I have already warned you before: People who continue to do any of those bad things will not receive good things from God. God has prepared those good things for the people who belong to His Kingdom. You must overcome these types of people in your workplace, in malls, in supermarkets, in parties, and when you exercise.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Mat. 5:14-16)

You must show your light to the world.

III. The Test of Human Nature-Be An Overcomer

Before we are called by God, we have this human nature, and this nature was exploited by Satan. We are like the people of the world described in point number two. Satan sowed his seeds in our hearts: the fruits of the human spirit (Mat. 13:24-30, 36-43).

You are not the only one who might have these bad seeds. Consider these scriptures:

• Jer. 17:9: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?”
• Rom. 7:18: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.”
• Mat. 15:19: “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”
• Gal. 5:17: “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”
• Rom. 8:7: “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.”
• John 3:6: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

There are many bad seeds—probably including you and me—but we should be alert. As it says in 2 Cor. 13:5: “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.”

Let us study what this means in Greek to get to the heart of the matter using the NKJV version.

These are the acts of the FLESH (Sarkos in Greek). It means flesh, body, human nature, or materiality. This refers to the frailties of human nature which is independent of God. It does not want to belong to God.

Verse 19:

• Sexual Immorality: This includes immorality, fornication, unchastity, incest, adultery, and porn.
• Impurity and Uncleanness (Akatharsia): Impurity or uncleanness in thought, desire, word, or deed—that which makes a person morally unclean before God. The Old Testament law regulated external uncleanness, but the New Testament usage expands it to spiritual inner defilement expressed in outward acts. It encompasses every distortion of God-given sexuality and the wider corruptions of the heart.
• Uncleanness and Lewdness (Aselgeia): Licentiousness, debauchery, sensuality, and lewdness. This is unchecked sensuality that flaunts moral restraint. Scripture presents it as an open, shameless indulgence in bodily appetites that rebels against God’s created order and despises one’s neighbor. While other words for sexual sin may emphasize the act, aselgeia highlights the insolent attitude that celebrates vice and entices others to join.

Verse 20:

• Idolatry (Eidólolatria): Image worship. Idolatry denotes the veneration, trust, or service rendered to anything or anyone other than the one true God revealed in Scripture. While outwardly expressed through statues or rituals, Scripture exposes idolatry primarily as a misplaced affection of the heart (Eze. 14:3), manifesting whenever a created thing is exalted to God’s place.
• Sorcery (Pharmakeia): Denotes the practice of manipulating human life or circumstances through potions, drugs, or magical arts that invoke supernatural influence apart from the living God. In Scripture, it is consistently grouped with sins that fracture covenant fidelity. While the modern term “pharmacy” descends from the same root, the biblical concern is not legitimate medicine but the use of substances or rituals to gain illicit spiritual power or to deceive.
• Hatred/Enmities (Echthra): Enmity, hostility, or deep-seated opposition, whether between human parties or toward God Himself.

Bible Studies, Prayers and Fasting: Be An Overcomer

• Strife, Contentions (Eris): Strife, discord, contention, quarrels, or debate. This describes having a ready spirit to quarrel. Properly, it is a readiness to dispute and a contentious spirit. In the Old Testament, one of the causes of strife is gossip. You stop the gossip, and the strife stops.
• Jealousies (Zelos): This term gathers two opposite passions: fervent devotion and corrosive envy. Depending on context, it is either honorable “zeal” or sinful “jealousy.” It is the heart’s intense heat toward a person, cause, or possession. Used positively toward preaching the gospel, it is honorable; used to destroy a person’s possession or honor, it is ignoble.
• Outbursts of Wrath (Thumos): Wrath, anger, passion, fierceness, or indignation. This includes (1) sinful, flesh-driven passion in mankind, and (2) righteous, judicial wrath in God’s dealings with evil. For example, there is a sinful indignation now to destroy Ukraine, as Russia wages a hybrid war against Europe. While Europe and the USA help defend Ukraine—like God dealing with evil—the evil acts of Russia are sinful. That is the difference between good anger and bad anger.

Do not Be a Hireling Christian

• Selfish Ambitions (Eritheia): Selfish ambition, strife, or rivalry. This refers to work done merely for hire (as a mercenary), referring to carnal ambition or selfish rivalry. Self-seeking rivalry is a moral disease that corrodes relationships and hides the glory of Christ behind personal agendas. This is evident in the churches of God among self-seeking individuals who, rather than serving God honestly, serve themselves like mercenaries and fight for positions and power to rule over other people, causing strife.
• Dissensions (Dichostasia): Division, dissension, and disunity. This is used for divisions which wrongly separate people into pointless or groundless factions, usually through wrong doctrines. This happened in the Old Testament with competing priests in Mt. Gerizim and Jerusalem.
• Factions, Heresies (Hairesis): Sect, faction, or heresy. A denomination like the Pharisees and Sadducees. In modern application, there are many COG factions. One faction just preaches the gospel without admitting members. Others preach that they want more spiritual growth but not numbers. This is a departure from the tenet of HWA, who preached the gospel to all the world to attract followers and help them grow into righteous members of the Body of Christ. Some also preach that the Torah is no longer applicable, but this idea is far from Mat. 5:17-19.

Verse 21:

• Envy, Murder (Phthonos): Envy or jealousy. Properly, a strong desire that sours due to sin. It is the miserable trait of being glad when someone experiences misfortune. Satan’s primary motivation to overthrow God was envy, and through his influence, people are murdered by the millions.
• Drunkenness (Methé): A state of intoxication brought on by alcoholic excess. The Bible treats it as morally destructive. While fermented drink had legitimate festive uses in the Church (Lev. 23), willful over-indulgence is a work of the flesh.
• Carousing, Revelries (Kómos): Revelry, carousing, or orgy. Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. It refers to a party of revelers parading the streets or wild, furious rituals.

Modern examples of Kómos include:

• Night Clubs: Wild scenes involving alcohol, drugs, and casual sexual encounters.
• Music Concerts: Festivals and raves characterized by drug use and lewd behavior.

The Nova Music Festival attack, which occurred on Oct. 7, 2023, took place on the morning of the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah. In Jewish tradition, Shemini Atzeret is known as the “eighth day of assembly” (Lev. 23:36) and is a distinct holiday that immediately follows the seven days of the Sukkot festival (Feast of Tabernacles). The term “Last Great Day” is often used in a Christian biblical context to refer to this specific eighth day, based on the description in the Book of John (John 7:37).

I have been observing Shemini Atzeret since I was about 18. When the attack happened, I was keeping it. I read it in the morning and I froze and I remember Ecc. 9:12.

They Lacked Knowledge of the Holy Days

• The attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 364 civilians and security personnel at the festival site, with dozens more taken hostage, making it the deadliest single incident during the broader October 7 Hamas-led attacks on Israel.
• The “battle” or effort to reclaim the hostages taken from the Nova Festival on October 7, 2023, lasted for over two years for some individuals.
• The last living hostages kidnapped from the festival were released on October 13, 2025, as part of a ceasefire agreement, meaning they were held in captivity for approximately 738 days (just over two years). The body of the last Nova festival hostage was returned two days later, on October 15, 2025.

For those who lost their lives at the Nova Music Festival, death came like a thief in the night. It was a High Day—an annual Holy Day—a time set apart for the faithful to be in the synagogue or in quiet meditation at home before services. This High Day was observed by Christ, John 7:37.  Instead, they were out in an open field. I doubt if these people knew the reasons for their troubles. I doubt it.

Study Your Bible and Pray Daily-Be An Overcomer

The scene was a modern reflection of the days of Noah (Mat. 24:37-39). We must meditate on the wisdom found in Ecc.  9:12: “For man also does not know his time: Like fish taken in a cruel net, like birds caught in a snare, so the sons of men are snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them.”

Tragically, as the Prophet Hosea noted, people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. When we cast off the protection of God’s Law and His Holy Days, we leave ourselves vulnerable to the snare.

• Semestral Break: “Spring Break” parties known for binge drinking and promiscuity.
• Uncontrolled House Parties: Where the goal is hard partying without moral restraint.
• Mardi Gras/Carnival: Festivals that mix public drunkenness and debauchery.
• Hookup Culture: Modern equivalents of sexual revelry.

“Envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Gal. 5:21)

God tests the hearts of men primarily to reveal their true character, strengthen their faith, develop perseverance, and ultimately to refine them.

“I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.” (Jer. 17:10) These tests are opportunities for spiritual growth and demonstrating obedience.

Reasons for Testing:

1. Reveal True Faith: Tests expose whether faith is superficial or genuine.
2. Develop Character & Maturity: Trials build perseverance and dependence on God.
3. Show True Selves: Tests bring out hidden strengths and weaknesses for self-assessment.
4. Refine & Purify: Like a crucible refines gold, trials purify the heart.
5. To Reward Obedience: Enduring tests with faith leads to rewards and eternal life.

Servants of God who were tested:

• Isaiah: He was martyred under wicked King Manasseh by being cut in two with a wood saw while hiding inside a tree, Heb. 11:37.
• Jeremiah: Thrown into a dungeon.
• Elijah: Persecuted by Jezebel and her husband Ahab.
• Stephen: Stoned to death by fellow Jews.
• Paul: Persecuted by his own people.
• Christ: Accused by religious authorities, by his own people he wanted to save, and killed by the Romans.

God tests the hearts of men hoping they will succeed and He will reward them of reigning with Him, while Satan tests Christians hoping they will fall down like him and barbecued in the Lake of Fire. Miseries love companies.

It is a sobering truth that most trials for a Christian do not come from the world at large, but from their own fellow brethren. This was true in the first century, and it remains true today. When the source of conflict is someone who shares your faith, the sting is deeper and the test of character is more demanding.
